The ONS has published the demography and migration data of the CENSUS 2021 including population and household estimates, households and resident characteristics and international migration.

A usual resident is anyone who on Census Day, 21 March 2021 was in the UK and had stayed or intended to stay in the UK for a period of 12 months or more, or had a permanent UK address and was outside the UK and intended to be outside the UK for less than 12 months.

A household is one person living alone or a group of people (not necessarily related) living at the same address who share cooking facilities and share a living room or sitting room or dining area.


Demography and migration

Population

The number of usual residents in Trafford according to the Census 2021 is 235,052, representing an increment of 3.7% from the Census 2011 when the number of usual residents was 226,578.

There are 120,644 females (51.33%) and 114,408 males (48.66%) in Trafford according to the Census 2021. Similarly, there were 115,619 female (51.03%) and 110,959 male (48.97%) in 2011.

Comparing Trafford’s population by 5-years age bands from 2011 to 2021, the number of children aged 4 and under have fallen 9.4% whilst the children aged 5 to 9 and 10 to 14 have risen 14.1% and 16.7% respectively. The population between 15 and 49 has fallen except for the age band 35 to 39. All the 5-year age bands above 50 fell in numbers.

Greater Manchester is rising more or falling less than Trafford in 14 of the 18 5-years age bands and England is rising more or falling less than Trafford in 13 of the 18 5-years age bands.

Old Trafford (15%), Altrincham East (12.2%) and Altrincham West (10.1%) were the MSOAs in Trafford with the highest increase in usual residents from 2011 to 2021. In contrast Partington (-2.5%), Urmston East (-2.3%), and Urmston West (-2.3%) were the MSOAs in Trafford with the highest decrease in usual residents from 2011 to 2021.

Population Density

Trafford has the second lowest increase in population density in Greater Manchester compared to the 2011 Census at 3.58%. Wigan’s increase was smallest at 3.55% while Salford had the highest at 15.24%. The average increase for all Greater Manchester is 6.61%

Households

Trafford has the lowest increase in households in Greater Manchester compared to the 2011 Census at 1.89%. Salford had the largest increase at 11.16%. The average increase for all Greater Manchester is 4.37%

Household composition

The most common household composition in Trafford according to the 2021 Census were 2-people households which represented 31.3% of all households, followed closely by one-person households representing 29.5%. There was a slight increment for both 2-people household with 32.9% and one-person household with 29.8% from the 2011 Census.

According to the 2021 Census, single family households with dependent children represented 30.2% of Trafford households, single family households where all children are non-dependent(adult children) represented 11% of Trafford households, and single family households with no children represented 15.1% of Trafford households, according to the 2021 Census.

One person households aged 66 years and over represented 13.3% of Trafford households, while 16.2% represented other one person households, making the total of one person households 29.5% of all households in Trafford according to the 2021 Census.

The census 2021 provides estimates of households experiencing deprivation in four dimensions: Employment, education, health and disability, and household overcrowding. However the data provided in this dataset does not distinguish which deprivation dimension is most prevalent in each area. In Trafford 53.9% (51,885) of households are not deprived in any dimension, 30.9% (29,699) are deprived in one dimension, 12.1% (11,666) in two dimensions, 3% (2,883) in three dimensions, and 0.1% (136) in four dimensions.

When comparing the MSOAs of Trafford, there is a difference of more than 30% between the MSOAs with the highest and lowest percentage of households that are deprived in one or more dimensions, these are Partington and Hale respectively. 2 in 3 households in Partington are deprived in any dimension, contrasting with Hale where 2 in 3 households are not deprived in any dimension.

International migrations

Non-UK born people represented 14.9% (35,022) of Trafford residents according to the 2021 Census, a 3.7% growth from the 2011 Census when 11.2% of Trafford residents were born outside of the UK.

2,130 non-UK born Trafford residents, arrived to the UK from the start of 2020 to the 2021 Census day. They represent 0.9% of the total Trafford residents and 6.1% of the total non-UK born Trafford residents.
