The CENSUS 2021 in England and Wales was the first to ask people if they had previously served in the UK armed forces. The ONS has released the UK armed forces veterans: Census 2021 in England and Wales topic summary, including the data and a publication.

These data relate to those who previously served in the UK armed forces and excludes those who are currently serving (even if they had left and rejoined the armed forces).


UK armed forces veterans in Trafford

According to the Census 2021, 5,341 Trafford residents have previously served in the UK armed forces which represented 2.87% of the residents aged 16 and over. The equivalent figure for England and Wales is 3.8% which is higher than in Trafford.

From those who served in the UK armed forces, 3,796 previously served in the regular UK armed forces, 1,350 previously served in the UK reserve armed forces, and 195 previously served in both regular and reserve UK armed forces, representing 2.04%, 0.73% and 0.1% of Trafford residents aged 16 and over respectively.

In Trafford, 5.3% (5,093) of the households have at least 1 person who previously served in the UK armed forces. Out of these households, 97.4% of them have 1 person who previously served in the UK and the remaining 2.6% of them have 2 or more people who previously served in the UK armed forces, according to the Census 2021

Of the Trafford residents who previously served in the UK armed forces, 98% were living in a household and 2% were living in a communal establishment at the time of the Census 2021.
